Luxembourg-based OQ Technology is preparing to deploy a small satellite to test using C-band to connect smartphones from low Earth orbit, joining SpaceX in a push to repurpose part of the spectrum for direct-to-device (D2D) services.

OQ Technology said its demonstration proved its satellites can communicate directly with ordinary smartphones with no apps, upgrades or ground network, using a standard that's suitable for public safety.
